It all began...
Vd. Krishnashastri Puranik (1839-1905) was a renowned and established Ayurvedic Physician practising at Panvel. This was an era when individual Ayurvedic Physicians were on rise, away from established Guru-Shishya Parampara. One day at his clinic an incident happened, which sparked the birth of a great enterprise. A prescription given by him was wrongly dispensed by an incompetent compounder. This brought forth a need for Standardized Ayurvedic formulations, which would help Ayurvedic physicians to concentrate on treatment and save them from time consuming task of preparing medicines themselves at their clinics. In those days establishing an Indian company was a novelty but Vaidya Krishnashastri Puranik knew that, the imperativeness of quality for the best treatment of Ayurved is as important as air for breathing. He therefore on the sound platform of 'Quality' laid the seed of 'Shree Dhootapapeshwar Aryoaushadhi Karkhana' of Panvel.
In 1893 Vd. Krishnashastri Puranik handed over the responsibility of Shree Dhootapapeshwar Aryoaushadhi Karkhana to his son Vd. Vishnushastri Puranik (1864-1914). He was a visionary and believed in extensive healing powers of Ayurved. However at that time the reach of Ayurved was limited to making traditional medicines which was a lengthy process. Therefore he pioneered the process innovation as well as mechanization and industrialized the method of preparation. ‘Yantras’ were implanted in 1903 to speed up the production and fulfill the requirements so that more people could get benefit of Ayurved and in their relief he found the ultimate purpose of what he did.
The obsession of serving as many people as possible prodded him to escalate the production to meet the demands. This necessitated larger batch sizes through high end technology and processes for specific products like Bhasmas, Rasayanas and Asavarishtas. The beginning of the 19th Century saw the expansion of the Panvel factory in the manufacturing of traditional products. Standard protocols for manufacturing were implemented even in that period. The improvisation and absorption of technology through process efficiency and use of specialized machines to manufacture Ayurvedic formulations without in any way compromising the spirit of the Ayurvedic diktat was innovative and ingenious. Even today at Shree Dhootapapeshwar Limited, the same batch protocols that were laid over a century ago are being followed to maintain and uphold the trust of Ayurvedic practitioners and consumers of recent times.
Educating the masses on the benefits of Ayurved was an important objective for our founders and therefore in 1905, Printing & Publishing Enterprise under the banner of ‘Shree Dhootapapeshwar Mudranalay’ came into existence. The 2nd All India Conference of Ayurvedic Vaidya Maha Summelan was organized in 1908, at Panvel by the company which 300 Vaidyas from different parts of India namely Kashi, Mathura, Jaipur, Marwana, Gujrat, Nashik & Mumbai attended and took benefit.
Our forefathers made quality the soul of our company and therefore as years passed by, Shree Dhootapapeshwar became Synonym for quality formulations. Marketing was still in its nascent stage and was usually through mail order catalogues. But as demand increased, around 6 depots were established by 1905 in major cities of Northern and Western India.
In 1933 Vd. Gangadhar Vishnu Puranik (1907-1980) took the reins of the company. By then India was changing, communication facilities improved and Shree Dhootapapeshwar goodwill was recognized in far of lands. Illustrious leaders of the Independence struggle like Mahatma Gandhi and leading Ayurvedic practitioners visited the factory. The word ‘Panvel’ and the company symbol of a temple became synonymous with Ayurvedic knowledge, quality and authentic products. In 1938 the company name was changed from ‘Shree Dhootapapeshwar Aryoaushadhi Karkhana' to ' Shree Dhootapapeshwar Panvel Ltd.'
From 1978 onwards company is known by its current name 'Shree Dhootapapeshwar Ltd'.
To cater to the ever increasing demand 26 depots were opened by the company and intensive marketing was undertaken in the then 8 major states of India. With this The Dhootapapeshwar brand became truly national. Modern technology was employed in the packaging as per the dosage requirements
